Scandinavia 2019: Overview

Scandinavia had  been on our bucket list for a very long time! We had flown to Tromso in 2016 when Lyn had run the Polar Night Half Marathon, and I had run the 5k. We had run in a very dark, snow filled Tromso but had quickly fallen in love, so much so that Lyn returned a few years later to run the Midnight Sun Marathon with his friend Phil. They managed to combine that with a whistle stop trip to Nordkapp, but Lyn was desperate to explore Norway more fully.

We carved out a 4 week period for the summer of 2019 and plotted our route, which would take us from Calais across France, Belgium, the Netherlands & Germany before catching a ferry to Gothenburg in Sweden. From there we spent a few days in Stockholm, then up the Baltic coast of Sweden, across the border into Finland, then up the Torne River and into the top of Norway. From there we visited the highlight of our trip; the beautiful Lofoten Islands and Senja. We returned back down Route 17, one of the world’s most scenic drives, and then the Atlantic Road, before visiting the switchbacks of Trollstigen and the beautiful fjord of Gerainger. After visiting Oslo for a few days we ferried back across to Denmark, visiting Aarhus before heading back into Germany and the lovely town of Wilhelmshaven before winding our way back over the dykes of the Zeeland in the Netherlands before our tunnel home.

Read on to follow our journey and discover stories of beautiful capital cities,

amazing islands, stunning coastal views, fabulous dips, hikes, kayaking trips and runs, visits to interesting museums, scary switchback roads and a glacier.

5011 miles of travelling, 32 nights of camping, 24 nights of them wild camping, 21 ferries and 8 countries.

Disclaimer: This trip was taken in the Summer of 2019. Costs, roads etc may have changed since then.
